Letter to Readers

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy "Year of the Eucharist"!

Pope John Paul II proclaimed this year, beginning in Oct. '04 as the "Year of the Eucharist". We encourage you to become even closer to Jesus through frequent Mass and reception of Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. Praise God that He loves us so much that He continues to be with us, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1377, 1413), but under the appearance of bread and wine (Jn 6:51-58). Jesus wants to bless us so much and be with us always, until the end of the age (Mt 28:20). "Do this as a remembrance of Me" (Lk 22:19).

In addition to this fantastic blessing from God, the world Synod of Bishops wrote a decree, dated Dec. 25 '04, signed by Cardinal James Francis Stafford and Father John Francis Girotti (respectively major penitentiary and regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary), declaring that during the Year of the Eucharist, a plenary indulgence may be gained by participating in acts of worship and veneration of the Most Holy Sacrament.

The Catechism explains that "an indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints (CCC, 1471)." The decree reminds the faithful that to obtain a plenary indulgence it is necessary to observe the "usual conditions": "sacramental Confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer in keeping with the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, with the soul completely removed from attachment to any form of sin."

We have a series of retreats this summer that cover the Catechism of the Catholic Church, retreats on marriage, the Gospel of John, and the Book of Revelation. Please call 937-205- 0128 (Cincinnati area: 513-312-3151) or see the envelope flap of this booklet for more details. We also invite you to the Bible Institute which begins on July 22nd, 2005 at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Read more about the Bible Institute.

Thanks to you for all that you do for Jesus and His church. May all of us be witnesses for the risen Jesus and lead others to a total commitment to Jesus.

Your Brothers in Jesus,

George Schmidl, Jerry Cappel, and Mark Schuermann (Directors of Presentation Ministries)
